Superior Essex Communications Joins materialsCAN Collective

June 13, 2019

Superior Essex Communications announced today that it has joined the materialsCAN collective.

materialsCAN, an acronym standing for Materials Carbon Action Network, includes members of the global building industry that are ready to prioritize action in the reduction of embodied carbon within building materials and in the built environment as a whole. Interface, Inc., which is a global commercial flooring company launched this group in 2018 alongside Skanska, Gensler, USG, Saint-Gobain/CertainTeed, and Armstrong Ceilings. Superior Essex and Kingspan Insulated Panels are the two newest members to join the collaboration.

Annie Bevan, the Global Head of Sustainability for Superior Essex Communications, said that membership in materialsCAN continues to outwardly displays the support Superior Essex Communications has to collective global sustainability initiatives.

“Words may inspire, but it is action that creates change,” Bevan said. “We have spent a long time discussing what needs to happen to facilitate change in buildings and now it is time for action.

“It may be cliche, but a rising tide will lift all ships and the team at Superior Essex Communications fully believes that we can help that “awareness tide” come in. Our processes, products, as well as this participation speaks to that every day. We welcome the opportunity to continue taking steps forward, to inspire true change globally.”

Superior Essex Communications is the only cable manufacturer to offer externally verified EPDs, HPDs and GreenCircle Multi-Attribute Labels for over 55+ product families. It also offers the only Red List Free communication cables in the world and has Declare and Living Product Challenge certifications for multiple product families. All of these products are manufactured in a certified Zero Waste to Landfill facility and are designed to help customers reach sustainability goals by contributing to green building certifications like the Living Building Challenge, WELL, and LEED v4 and v4.1.

Superior Essex has begun its journey to optimize the life cycle impacts of its products, to prove lower embodied carbon to assist buildings to reduce their overall embodied carbon impacts. Sustainable intelligent buildings through Power-over-Ethernet technology can also support resilient building design by enabling lower energy usage and therefore reducing operational carbon as well.

materialsCAN has outlined what each participant in the supply chain can do in order to reduce carbon. It has a five-point plan for all of Architects & Designers, Contractors, and Manufacturers to follow in the move towards embodied carbon reduction.
